Purple Ribbon Award

Purple Ribbon Award

(Highest honor of the year)

What PRA is?

Purple Ribbon Award (aka PRA) is the most prestigious award of the Nepalese Society, TX. The vision behind this award is to recognize and honor the person and/or the organization who has done exceptional work towards humanity and social work. The exception may be granted for other good cause as well, especially if the work has remarkable impact to improve the lives of the Nepalese around the world or if it has contributed to national integrity and development of Nepal.

The PRA was conceptualized by 2014 EC member Binay Aryal in association with the then GS (Bijay Bhattarai), Finance VP (Bal Joshi) and the president (Bhuwan Acharya) with the aim to encourage people to get involved in the area such as social justice, humanity, national integrity and national development of Nepal.

Why we needed PRA in NST?

Nepalese Society, TX has been awarding people under so many titles but it lacked one honor that could highlight the most exceptional work for Nepal and the Nepalese around the world. In addition, NST also lacked the award that could help the candidate stand distinguished in the crowd of other award recipients.

Selection Process:

The PRA is given out only once a year and that to only one person or one institution. This awards is usually handed over during Dashain’s cultural event where we have been having the largest crowd of the year.

NST's award committee takes opinions or nominations from various members of the community, including EC members. It then tables the list of two nominees before the full body meeting of the EC and it approves one of the two nominees. The candidate needs to be approved by at least 75% of the EC members. NST EC may get approval through electronic process as well.

How we hand-over and what it contains:

  1. Award recipient will be called up on the stage.
  2. Current and all available past presidents will be called up on the stage.
  3. National anthem of Nepal will be played.
  4. The current president of NST will affix the NST pin and hand over a Nepalese national flag to the recipient.
  5. The team of former NST presidents led by the current president will jointly hand over the purple ribbon plaque, certificate and an envelope with a check for a small donation ($1000-$2500), as a token of gift, expected to be utilized in the related project/s. The gift amount needs to be pre-approved by the Executive Team.
  6. The MC will request the audience to stand up and applaud, to pay respect to the Award and the receipent for his contribution.
